Chapter 1 · Chapter 1

The check arrives on a silver tray. I'm not expecting it. I haven't ordered yet—haven't even looked at the menu. I'm sitting in the corner booth of The Sapphire Room waiting for my client to arrive, scrolling through contract revisions on my phone, when the server appears beside me. "Ms. Drake?" She's young, maybe twenty-five, with dark hair pulled into a sleek ponytail. Her name tag reads *Maren*. "I need you to settle your account before we can proceed with today's reservation." I glance up. "I'm sorry, what account?" She sets the tray down. The total at the bottom makes my vision blur. $30,000. "There must be some mistake," I say, my voice steady despite the spike of adrenaline. "I've never been here before." "Your mother-in-law has been dining here regularly for the past six months." Maren's tone is polite but firm. "You're listed as the guarantor on her account. The balance is now due in full." I set my phone down carefully. "I don't have a mother-in-law. I'm not married. I've never been engaged." "Ms. Drake—" "This is fraud. Or extortion. Either way, I'm calling the police." I reach for my phone, but Maren doesn't flinch. She pulls a folded document from her apron pocket and places it beside the check. "Before you do that," she says quietly, "you might want to look at this." The document is a standard guarantor agreement. The kind restaurants use for corporate accounts or high-profile clients who want to run tabs. My signature is at the bottom. Not a forgery. Not a digital copy. My actual signature—the distinctive capital V with the flourish I've used since law school, the slight backward slant on the final *e*. "This isn't possible," I whisper. "There's more." Maren turns to the second page. My fingerprints. Clear thermal impressions on the signature line, authenticated and dated. Six months ago.
