Chapter 1 · Chapter 1
The lawyer's words didn't make sense at first.
"Miss Chen, you've inherited the entire Blackwood estate. Approximately 847 million dollars, plus properties in seven countries."
I stared at him across the mahogany desk, my coffee shop apron still tied around my waist. "There must be a mistake. I don't know anyone named Blackwood."
"Your great-aunt, Vivienne Blackwood. She passed three weeks ago." He slid a photograph across the desk.
The woman in the picture had my eyes. My exact eyes.
"I've never heard of her," I whispered.
"She was very private. But she was quite specific in her will—everything goes to you, Maya Chen. Her only living blood relative."
My phone buzzed. Unknown number.
*Don't accept the inheritance. Your life depends on it.*
I looked up at the lawyer, my hands shaking. "Who else knows about this?"
"The family, of course. Vivienne's stepchildren and their spouses. They were... not pleased with her decision."
Another text: *They're already coming for you.*
The office door burst open.
A man in an expensive suit stood there, his jaw clenched. Behind him, two security guards blocked the exit.
"So you're the little nobody who thinks she can steal my family's fortune," he said.
I stood up, my chair scraping against the floor. "I didn't steal anything."
"Vivienne wasn't in her right mind. That will is getting contested." He stepped closer, and I could smell his cologne—expensive and suffocating. "But we can make this easy. Sign over your rights, walk away with a million dollars, and forget you ever heard the name Blackwood."
"And if I don't?"
His smile didn't reach his eyes. "Then you'll regret it."
The lawyer cleared his throat. "Mr. Blackwood, this is highly inappropriate—"
"Shut up, Morrison." The man's gaze never left mine. "What's it going to be, Maya?"
Every instinct screamed at me to take the money and run.
But those eyes in the photograph. Those were my mother's eyes too.
"I want to know why she chose me," I said.
His expression darkened. "Wrong answer."
