Chapter 1 · Chapter 1

Sometimes, life smacks you in the face when you least expect it. For me, it happened on an ordinary Tuesday morning while sipping overpriced coffee in my cubicle at Rhodes Enterprises. I was just a nobody—an assistant to the assistant of someone important. But that day, everything changed. It started with a simple email. "Urgent: Meeting at 10 AM, Boardroom A," read the subject line. I thought it was a mistake. Why would I be summoned to a boardroom filled with people whose net worth could buy and sell my entire existence? “Hey, Ava, did you get the email too?” asked Mia, my colleague and the only person who made the workday bearable. “Yeah, but it must be a mix-up,” I replied, trying to hide the flutter of nerves in my voice. We arrived at the boardroom to find a dozen or so elite members of the company already seated, including the enigmatic Alexander Rhodes himself. The billionaire heir to the Rhodes fortune, Alexander was as handsome as he was mysterious. His ice-blue eyes scanned the room with a cool detachment that made my skin prickle. "Thank you all for coming," Alexander began, his voice smooth and commanding. "I know you're wondering why you're here." He paused, his gaze landing directly on me. I felt a jolt of panic. Surely, he wasn't about to call me out in front of everyone. "As you know, my family’s holdings are vast and varied," he continued, "but we have some... internal matters that need delicately handled. Ava, you’ve been selected for a special assignment." My heart skipped a beat. "Me?" I managed to say, my voice barely a whisper. Alexander nodded. "You're to accompany me to a gala this Friday. As my date." Gasps echoed around the room. I was just a lowly assistant—why on earth would he choose me? Before I could find my voice to ask, he added, "This is not just a gala. There's a matter of family... importance that needs resolving." I nodded, dumbfounded. My mind raced with questions, but I knew better than to question the boss, especially not in front of his entire board. After the meeting, I hurried to catch up with Mia. "What just happened?" I asked, my hands trembling slightly. "I don't know," she replied, eyes wide. "But whatever it is, you've just stepped into a world way beyond us." That night, sleep was a distant friend, replaced instead by a nagging worry and a buzzing excitement. What kind of "family importance" could I possibly help with? The days leading up to the gala were a blur, and before I knew it, I found myself in a stunning dress, staring at my reflection. I had barely recognized myself, transformed by the stylist Alexander had sent. As I stepped into the lavish ballroom that Friday evening, my arm entwined with Alexander's, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was a pawn in a game I didn't understand. "Remember," Alexander whispered as we navigated the room, "this is more than just a social event." I nodded, my heart racing. We mingled, and I tried to blend into the background, but everything about me screamed outsider. Then, a voice I hadn't expected to hear—Oliver Rhodes, Alexander's estranged brother. Rumor had it they hadn't spoken in years. The tension was palpable when Oliver approached us, his eyes dark and full of secrets. "Ava, darling," Oliver said with a sly grin. "I didn't know Alex had a new companion." "She’s just helping me, Oliver," Alexander replied curtly, his grip on my arm tightening. Oliver chuckled, his gaze lingering on me. "Be careful, little bird. The Rhodes family has a way of devouring those who aren't careful." His words sent a shiver down my spine, but before I could respond, Alexander was leading me away, his pace brisk and urgent. "Stay away from him," Alexander warned once we were alone on the balcony. "He's dangerous." "Why am I really here, Alexander?" I asked, the words finally bursting out. "I'm just an assistant. This isn't my world." He turned, his eyes reflecting a storm of emotions. "I need someone I can trust, someone who isn't entrenched in all this... madness." "But why me?" "Because," he paused, taking a deep breath, "there's a secret in this family, Ava. And you’re about to find out why everything you think you know... is a lie." The words hung heavy in the night air, a revelation that felt like the world had turned upside down. I stumbled back, the enormity of his words sinking in. Before I could ask more, a loud crash from inside drew our attention, setting the entire ballroom into chaos. In that moment, standing on the precipice of a truth I never asked for, I realized I was in way over my head. But there was no turning back now.
