Chapter 1 · Chapter 1
The envelope lay on my desk, its presence as menacing as a coiled snake. A simple white envelope with my name scrawled across the front in sharp, bold letters. I hadn't touched it yet. Fear mixed with curiosity, keeping my fingers hovering just above the surface.
I had spent the last six months as an intern in the PR department at Callaway Enterprises, one of the most prestigious firms in the city. My boss, Mr. Callaway, was known for his charm and razor-sharp instincts. But this—this was different. The envelope had arrived anonymously, and something about it set off alarm bells in my mind.
Taking a deep breath, I finally picked it up and ripped it open. Inside was a letter, and as I unfolded it, my heart began to race.
"Meet me at the Hollow Bridge at midnight if you want to uncover the truth about Jacob Callaway," it read.
The Hollow Bridge was notorious, not just for its eerie name but for the stories surrounding it—whispers of secrets exchanged and sins confessed in the dead of night. But why did this involve Jacob, Mr. Callaway's son, a man I barely knew except for the occasional nod when our paths crossed in the office?
"Hey, Lila," a voice snapped me back to the present. It was Emma, my fellow intern and closest friend—a lifeline in the otherwise cutthroat world of corporate ambition.
"What's up?" she asked, eyeing the envelope with curiosity.
I hesitated for a moment, then handed her the letter. As she read, her eyes widened. "This is either a joke or something serious. What are you going to do?"
"I don't know," I admitted, glancing at the clock. It was only ten in the morning, and already the day was spiraling out of control. "I mean, what could Jacob Callaway possibly have that involves me?"
Emma shrugged. "He’s the heir to a billion-dollar empire. Maybe it’s a prank? Or maybe... it's something big."
I nodded, trying to seem more confident than I felt. "Well, there's only one way to find out."
The day dragged on, each hour passing with excruciating slowness. I attempted to focus on my tasks, but my mind kept drifting back to the letter and the mystery it promised.
By the time the clock struck eleven-thirty, I was a bundle of nerves, my stomach twisted into knots. Emma had offered to come with me, but I declined. If this was as serious as it seemed, I needed to face it alone.
The city was quieter than usual as I made my way to the bridge. The streets were bathed in the cold light of streetlamps, shadows stretching long and ominous across the pavement.
Finally, I reached the Hollow Bridge. A solitary figure stood silhouetted against the moonlight, and as I approached, I realized it was Jacob Callaway himself.
He looked different outside the confines of the office, more real and vulnerable. His usual air of confidence was replaced with something else—something that looked like worry.
"Lila," he greeted, his voice low and steady. "I'm glad you came."
"You sent the letter?" I asked, trying to keep my voice from trembling.
He shook his head. "No, but I know who did. And I know why you're here."
I waited for him to continue, my heart pounding like a drum.
"There's something you need to know about my family," Jacob said, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my skin prickle. "Something that could change everything for you, for me, and for everyone at Callaway Enterprises."
"Why me?" I whispered, the question escaping before I could stop it.
"Because," he replied, taking a deep breath as if steeling himself for a great leap, "you have a right to know. Your mother used to work for my father, and she left something behind—a secret that ties us together in ways you can't imagine."
The words hung in the air between us, heavy with implication. My mother. The mother I had lost years ago, suddenly woven into a web of intrigue I never knew existed.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and anticipation.
Jacob reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, crumpled photograph. He handed it to me, and I took it with shaking hands.
It was a picture of my mother, smiling bright and carefree, her arm around none other than Mr. Callaway. They looked close—intimately so.
"This changes everything, Lila," Jacob said, his voice a mere breath. "We need to find out what really happened between them. And why my father went to such lengths to hide it."
I stared at the photograph, my mind racing with questions, possibilities, and a gnawing sense of betrayal.
"What if this is just the beginning?" I murmured, unable to tear my eyes away from the image.
"Then we're in for one hell of a ride," Jacob replied, his gaze steady and determined.
As I stood at the edge of the bridge, the night air whispering secrets around us, I realized there was no turning back. Whatever lay ahead, I had to know the truth.
And in that moment, I understood: my life was about to change forever.
