Chapter 1 · Chapter 1
I opened my eyes to my childhood bedroom ceiling.
The glow-in-the-dark stars I'd stuck up there when I was twelve stared back at me. My heart hammered against my ribs.
This was impossible.
I sat up so fast my head spun. My hands—they were smooth. No wedding ring. No age spots. No scars from the kitchen accident that happened when I was thirty-seven.
I grabbed my phone from the nightstand. The date glowed back at me: September 3rd, 2012.
I was eighteen again.
Ten years had vanished. Ten years of the worst mistake of my life, erased like they never happened.
My breath came in short gasps. I'd gone to sleep last night—or was it ten years from now?—as a thirty-eight-year-old woman trapped in a loveless marriage. I'd cried myself to sleep like I did most nights, listening to Marcus come home late, smelling like someone else's perfume.
And now I was here.
Back before it all began.
Back before I met him.
I stumbled to the mirror. My reflection showed exactly who I used to be—fresh-faced, hopeful, stupid. The girl who thought love conquered all. The girl who would meet Marcus Chen in exactly two weeks at the university orientation and fall head over heels for his charming smile and family wealth.
The girl who would waste twenty years of her life on a man who never loved her back.
"Not this time," I whispered to my reflection.
My phone buzzed. A text from my best friend Lily: "Can't wait for orientation! Two weeks until we're college girls!"
Two weeks until I was supposed to meet Marcus.
Two weeks to change everything.
I made myself a promise right then and there, standing in my childhood bedroom with my whole life ahead of me: I would never, ever let Marcus Chen into my life again.
No matter what.
