The champagne bubbles caught the light like tiny diamonds as I raised my glass, my hand trembling slightly with excitement. Around me, three hundred guests filled the Grand Meridian ballroom, their faces glowing with admiration and joy. My engagement party. The night I'd dreamed about since Derek Chen first slipped that platinum ring onto my finger six months ago.
"To Maya Lin," Derek announced, his arm wrapped possessively around my waist. "The most beautiful dancer in the city, and soon to be my wife."
The applause was deafening. I caught my mother's eye across the room—she was crying happy tears, dabbing at her face with a silk handkerchief. My father stood beside her, beaming with pride. After years of watching me struggle through dance academy, performing in small venues, working toward my breakthrough role with the National Ballet Company, they were finally seeing me settle into the life they'd always wanted for me.
If only I'd known that in less than two hours, that life would be shattered into pieces too small to ever reassemble.
"Drink up, love," Derek whispered against my ear, his breath warm. "I have a surprise for you later."
I smiled and sipped the champagne he'd specially selected for me. It tasted slightly bitter, but I attributed that to the expensive vintage. Derek had impeccable taste—in wine, in art, in everything. That's what had attracted me to him in the first place when we met at a charity gala two years ago. He was sophisticated, successful, and he'd pursued me with an intensity that made me feel like the center of his universe.
"You seem distracted," he murmured, his fingers tightening on my waist.
"Just overwhelmed," I said, leaning into him. "Everything is so perfect."
He kissed my temple. "It's about to get even better."
Twenty minutes later, the room started spinning. I gripped Derek's arm, confused by the sudden wave of dizziness that washed over me.
