Chapter 1 · Chapter 1
It was supposed to be a normal Friday at the office, another day of pushing papers and enduring Linda’s endless gossip about her cats. But everything changed when I got the text. "Meet me at the rooftop. Urgent." It was from Lucas Harrington, the CEO of the billion-dollar company where I was just a lowly assistant. My heart raced. Lucas never talked to me directly.
I shoved my phone back into my pocket and hurried to the elevator, my mind buzzing with possibilities. What could be so urgent? As the elevator ascended, I glanced at my reflection in the mirrored walls, straightening my navy blazer. My palms were sweaty, and I could feel my pulse quickening with each floor we passed.
Finally, the doors slid open to the rooftop. The view was breathtaking, the city sprawled beneath a setting sun, but I barely noticed. Lucas was there, standing at the edge, his back to me. He was the kind of man who commanded attention without trying—a tailored suit, perfectly tousled hair, and an air of control.
"Mr. Harrington," I called out, trying to keep my voice steady.
He turned, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine. "Thank you for coming, Emily."
"Of course. What’s this about?"
He hesitated, something I'd never seen him do. Lucas was always so sure, so confident. "I need your help, and you're the only one I can trust."
I blinked, taken aback. "Me? But why?"
He ran a hand through his hair, looking oddly vulnerable. "I'm sure you've heard rumors about the board planning a takeover."
I nodded slowly. Office gossip traveled faster than light, and the whispers of power struggles had been growing louder by the day.
"I need someone on the inside," Lucas said. "Someone who can keep an eye on things, report back to me. Someone discreet."
"Why me? I'm just an assistant."
"Exactly. You blend in. No one would suspect you."
I paused, considering. It was risky. But the promise of stepping into the intrigue of corporate drama was oddly thrilling. "Okay, I’ll do it. But what’s in it for me?"
A faint smile played on his lips. "If we succeed, you’ll be promoted. And there's a significant bonus involved."
The prospect of a better position and more money was tempting. "Alright. I'm in."
He relaxed visibly. "Thank you, Emily. I knew I could count on you."
As I turned to leave, my phone buzzed again. Another message, this one from an unknown number. "Be careful who you trust. Lucas Harrington is not who he seems."
I froze, my breath catching in my throat. What did that mean? I glanced back at Lucas, but he was already on his phone, distracted. The warning was ominous, clouding the promise of my new secret role.
Could it be true? Was Lucas hiding something? Questions swirled in my brain, but I had no answers. Yet.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket, the weight of the message heavy as I headed back to the elevator. My heart pounded with the thrill of the unfolding mystery. Everything felt different now, charged with tension and excitement.
As the elevator descended, a chilling thought struck me. What if the message was right? What if I was just a pawn in a much larger game? I was in deep now, and there was no turning back.
The finality of my decision hit me like a thunderclap. My normal life was gone, replaced by secrets and shadows. The stakes were high, and I was caught in the middle of something I barely understood.
The elevator doors opened, and I stepped out, my mind racing. The truth was out there, tangled in lies and deceit. I just had to find it—before it was too late.
And then, as I walked back to my desk, the final line of that message flashed in my mind. "Lucas Harrington is not who he seems."
Who is he, really? And what have I just gotten myself into?
